The Bulldogs banished a ghost Saturday night in a huge victory Saturday against Winthrop, a team they’ve lost to 15 straight times. From the local newspaper:

ASHEVILLE — On Groundhog Day, UNC Asheville peeked out and saw an opponent that has cast a giant shadow over the Big South Conference for the past nine seasons.

But after a second-half blitz helped Asheville blow past Winthrop 71-56 Saturday in front of a loud and frenzied sellout crowd, it might be all sunshine and six more weeks of winning basketball for the Bulldogs.

In what may have been the finest 10 minutes an Asheville team ever played, the Bulldogs opened the second half with a 31-4 run that turned a seven-point halftime deficit into a 20-point lead.

The victory, Asheville’s seventh straight, snapped a string of 15 consecutive regular-season losses to the Eagles (14-8, 5-2) and gave the Bulldogs a two-game lead in the BSC standings at the halfway mark.

“Against a real good team, rarely have I seen a team play that good on offense and defense for 10 minutes,” Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach said.

    "From the local newspaper"

For some strange reason, this was the funniest thing I’ve read all day. 🙂
