I'm sorry that your budget doesn't afford you the opportunity to drink some of the rare stuff that only the monk has. Rare beers are expensive. If you go to any of the beer stores in town, you'll get an idea of how much some of the really unique stuff is. Add on getting people to pour it and a building to keep it in, and I don't think the prices are out of line at all. Barleys is an awesome place to grab a local pint, but it's not the monk.
Actually, it's hard to have MORE than one, unless you just enjoy paying double what most other craft beer bars in town charge. My girlfriend and I recently visited the south location and couldn't believe that two relatively tame craft brews (under 7 abv) clocked in at $12 total. With tip, that's $15 for two beers!
Thirsty Monk is all hype and advertising, that's really what you're paying for when you go there. They can continue to thrive on yuppies and otherwise gullible beer-snobs, I'll be enjoying my pint of Founders for $3.50 at Barleys.
I know what you mean. Hard to have just one when there are so many good choices. Founders beers aren't normally too expensive, though.
I think "Wallet Take-Over" would be a more appropriate characterization.
