The WLOS update: So what’s up with Mike Cuevas? And WLOSers party with Mickey Mouse

I recently noted that WLOS was advertising for a chief meteorologist. Yet current chief meteorologist Mike Cuevas remains on the air. And there’s a new face in the Weather Center — one Pamela Wright. I have yet to see her in action.

So what’s up? I don’t know. I’m hoping someone will chime in.

In other news, a group of WLOSers apparently ventured down to Walt Disney World. Holly Headrick blogs it here:

Six of us journeyed to Walt Disney World for eight days last week. Somehow, with a lot of help with planning from my co-workers, we managed to make it through all four theme parks at Disney. It was much more exhausting than a week of work combined, but well worth it. I quickly learned the key to Orlando is taking a day off in between the hustle and bustle and 95 degree heat of theme parks. We had a chance to visit SeaWorld and my favorite attraction there had to be the “Clyde and Seymour Show.” They are sea lions that put on a great performance while eating lots of treats. I was a big fan of that. The outlet malls provided me with lots of new clothes to wear to work which is always fun. The last day we ventured to the “Typhoon Lagoon” waterpark at Disney. It has an attraction where you can swim with sharks and stingrays. I thought I was going to love this, but learned snorkeling with a decent sized shark below me wasn’t exactly my thing.

I liked Mike Cuevas. I mostly watch channel 7 even though I live in WNC cause of Connie LeGrand. Christy Henderson is a pretty good weather gal too. If I want anything else, I check the weather channel. Local weather reports on the news are pretty weak at best, which is why prefer the channel with the better looking women.

Isn’t it amazing that people can be so mean when they don’t have to show their
    cowardly face?

No, Mike Cuevas is not arrogant. He just has class, style and good diction. These are three things that many WLOS viewers lack. The new anchor seems to be more in tune with the circus the Station really is.

Small world sometimes.I echo your words as to his presentation, demeanor and apparent professionalism. I was a sun bird, preferring the WNC mountains to the FL beaches; all good things must end and we came back to central florida and guess who we see now giving the weather in orlando? You guessed it,,,,,Mike Cuevas. Does not seem saddened by the loss.

My entire family misses Mike.. He was the most professional, well dressed, and accurate meteorologist news 13 has ever had.. Julie Wunder is okay.. she has definitely improved as she has matured. I think they hired her at 15.. thats how old she looked any way. But She is very ‘sweet’.

I am not trying to make fun of people with disabilities (is there actually a diagnosed disability with Winn) or to say that I am all that.. but WHAT are they doing with this Karen Winn? I do feel sorry for her but geeez.. that nasal whine that she does is almost unbearable. Not to mention the fact you cant tell which direction she is looking.. and the lobster claw hand pointing that she does… hmmmm I wonder who from her family hired her.. because that surely is the only reason she works there.

Mike was fine. Perhaps his professionalism was too much for the local folks.

Irrespective of Mr. Cuevas’ qualifications as a meterologist or his on air persona, I can attest to the fact that his visits to schools were a far cry from those of Mike Bettes. Mr. Cuevas was asked in 2005 to visit our school to talk to our students about weather as this was the topic we were studying in science. Our grade level faculty was unimpressed. Mr. Cuevas arrived an hour late and then spent what little time we had between his arrival and our lunch period talking about himself and not about weather. We never asked him back, and to be honest, that is when I quit watching channel 13 news. I do not know that Mr. Cuevas was an arrogant person as that is not for me to decide; however, I do think his interest in area schools was lacking and I think this is sad. Mike Bettes was a great ambassador for WLOS while Mike Cuevas, I am sorry to say, was not. Hopefully, Jason Boyer can reconnect with the community and reinstate positive feelings with teachers like me who felt we had inconvenienced Mr. Cuevas by asking him to visit our school.

Well -finally an answer to what happened to " WInky " as we liked to call him.
We actually enjoyed his weather reports – right or wrong – and he was a snazzy dresser – what with the always matching tie and pocket plume. I’m sure he will find a new niche in a larger market area . Now we can watch the continuing changling going on with Ms Wunder’s wardrobe adjustment – Karen hit her stride with that little wave to the kids at home at signoff – and Jason "yes you can " come home.

While outsiders seldom know the real reasons for employment separations, my wife and I will none the less miss Mike Cuevas. To us, as chief Meteorologist for WLOS Mike was always on message, to the point and a refreshing change from other area meteorologists. God’s speed Mike in whatever you do and wherever you land!

What DID happen to Mike? I hope he was offered a better position at a REAL station! WLOS signs on Karen Wynn and loses Mike Cuevas? I just don’t get it. I can’t even listen to Karen Wynn, let alone watch her! I turn off the TV or radio as soon as I hear her voice! I had no problem listening to Mike Cuevas (although, at first, I though he looked like a televangelist!). Julie was slow to grow on me but, she’s OK. My next question is…When is Darcel leaving????

In my opinion, Mike Cuevos was professional and personable. I will miss him and his dimples and wish him good luck in his endeavors. I think Jason Boyer will fit right in and he seems to be doing a fabulous job. We should welcome Jason back.

I LIKED Mike from the instant I saw him. Sad to see him go. He was first class. I’m sorry if folks thought he was arrogant, but I can’t imagine anyone more arrogant than Bob Caldwell!

Good Luck Mike! You will be missed.

TIMC– Are you kind of person who teaches their children to make fun of people with physical defects?? What’s with mocking Karen for something over which she has absolutely no control??? She has been dealt a hand and she is playing it very well. How about you? Or do you just like to say hateful things about others you don’t even know. You’re living up to your small brain status.
Keep your "I’m perfect in every way and you’re not." nastiness to yourself.

Ever since Mike Cuevos started doing the weather, my husband and I instantly DISliked him. He seemed arrogant, cocky and was always always WRONG with his forecast! And we hated the way he would contort his face to try and make his dimples show – obnoxious! Not that I’m complaining, but WHY did he leave? His decision, or the stations? Either way, we’re glad he’s gone.

Mike Cuevas was one the best weather newcasters on the air. I have lived in the Western North Carolina area for 5 years and previously in the NY metro area where they are very professional. Will miss him, WLOS will have a hard time finding a better weather person in my opinion.

Among all WLOS’s newscasters (including weather and sports) Mike was the only one who doesn’t emphasize prepositions! What a pleasure! I could come away from one of his presentations actually remembering a good bit of what he said. With the rest of you, all I remembered was "IN", "OF" and "ON" ! Mike is a class act. He’ll do fine.

I liked Cuevas to I thought he was very professional and i also thought his forcast was better than others that were there. It seems wlos cant keep a good weather person.I wonder if that speaks more about wlos not being that good of a place to work.

Mike Cuevas is a consummate professional–the best weatherman WLOS has ever had. He does’t deserve the vile characterizations he is getting in the posts that go back to July 3. True mountain people don’t treat their neighbors that way. If he is leaving, then I say "Godspeed." Mike won’t have any trouble finding a better job somewhere else.

Cuevas is in a different league than Blunder, Seltzer Water, or Karen Crosseyed. I’m sad he’s leaving. When he leaves WLOS will live up to their small town station status.

It’s very apparent newsy is Mike Cueves. No one feels that Mike is "confident and great at what he does" in the newsroom. Just telling it like it is.

From what I’ve heard, Mike is being allowed to work out his contract through Oct. Most of the newsroom want him out sooner.
