From the Get Down’s page on Facebook:

One of Asheville’s, and the East Coast’s, best music venues is in danger of shutting it’s doors, let’s not allow that to happen! Aside from struggling month to month to pay our normal operating costs, and trying to recover from all the legal issues that occurred last fall, we’re getting hit with 2 additional, and heavy, costs this month -renewing all of our city and alcohol licenses, and buying a full year of insurance. Without both of those things happening by the 1st of May, we can’t legally open our doors for business. All of our personal resources are tapped out, and so we’re reaching out to our community for support. We know, and appreciate, that we have a great and supportive music scene in Asheville, and not just the punk/metal scene, but the music scene as a whole, and we want to continue providing a fun and safe environment for that scene to keep growing. Its unfortunate, but the fact of the matter is that we can’t do that without a little extra support from the community right now. Any donations will help, no matter how small, so don’t be embarrassed to only give a few dollars! We have some great shows coming over this summer, let’s make sure they all happen at The Get Down!!!!!! Please follow this link to our Paypal Donation page and donate whatever you can, anything helps!!! We love you all!!

FYI- this event page is a fundraiser, not a show, please invite ALL of your friends- SPREAD THE WORD!

Last year, the owners of the club had a nasty and public split. That probably led to the legal fees referenced above. I was at the Get Down last weekend and have to say the joint appeared to be suffering a bit. We’ll see what happens.

So, comments are immediate now? Well then, I stand corrected on that point. Still wondering why this place gets left in the dust by Mtn.X’s web page lately.

because the venue is a dump and doesn’t bring in any noteworthy acts

Dude, what happened to this blog? Seriously. Why even have a comment section at this point if you’re only going to update it once or twice a month? The Get Down has plenty of supporters that have probably tried to leave comments to defend the establishment in the aftermath of all the haters, but who cares to keep up with a blog and check back on responses when it is so out of the loop from stories/topics that demand to be current on a day-to-day basis. Mega fail, Ash. Here’s to hoping this page gets back to a semblance of what it used to be.

If it was the east coast’s “best music venues”, they wouldn’t need donations. As of today, we still have the right to succeed OR fail in this country.

So a poorly laid out bar with no stage in West Asheville is “one of the East Coast’s best music venues”? Really?

I like having more music options, and I like having them spread out more in town, so I’m definitely hoping that The Get Down manages to struggle through and survive. Other than the legal fees, though, the “huge costs” they’ve identified are just standard costs of doing business as a bar and music venue. If they need donations to cover them now, is it *ever* going to be possible for them to make enough money to be self-sufficient?

i have no pity for these silly hipsters who have NO IDEA how to run a proper business. if you fail, you fail – don’t ask for charity when you’re on a sinking ship
