Tar Heels trounce Michigan State, win second NCAA title in five years

Here’s my two-word analysis: Tar. Heels.

The nickname comes from the Civil War days, when fighters from North Carolina earned a reputation for stubborn determination, for not backing down. That’s the personality embodied by Tyler Hansbrough and his teammates, though it played out over four years, rather than just one game.

The past three years, the Tar Heels lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, then the round of eight and last year, they lost in embarrassing fashion in the Final Four. But each year was a progression. Each year, they fought.

Hansbrough and his teammates decided to put off an NBA payday and stay in college for one more year while adhering to one goal, and one goal only – to win a National Championship.

They never gave up. They stuck to their goal like tar.

They practiced. They played. They won.

Congratulations.

Congratulations, Tar Heels, for setting the economy back another six months, throwing Detroit into further depression, upsetting hundreds of "Bobs and Barbs" from the Upper Peninsula, spoiling the hopes and dreams of thousands of underpaid United Autoworkers, and exposing ESPN/CBS experts for blathering boobs. It wasn’t enough to win the national championship, you had to do it by a combined 50 points over America’s Team (well, at least they were since the CBS coronation Saturday night).

I can’t think of a more dominant team in an NCAA tourney.
Course I can’t think at all, having stayed up most of the night.
