Apartment fire
Holly Headache tells us that six families are without homes after an early morning apartment fire at the Covington Apts. in south Ashvegas. Nobody was hurt.
Holly said firefighters had the blaze out, but then had to return because it reignited. Holly said investigators don’t believe it was arson. But there was no cause given.
Merrimon Avenue shooting
There was an early morning shooting in the parking lot of the Exxon station near the giant Staples on Merrimon Avenue. Some dude walked in and took a case of beer, walked out and got in a car. The night clerk followed the thief outside, and an altercation ensued. The store clerk fired a shot into the car and hit a passenger. No word on charges.
Funerals set
The funerals for two local soldiers killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan are now set. Both funerals, one in Asheville and the other in Burnsville, will be held Tuesday. Joseph Ray will be laid to rest in Asheville, while Kevin Akins will be buried in Burnsville. Both were members of the 391st Engineering Battalion.
Tar Heels lose
Jenny Dunn brought us the Tar Heel loss from the Dayton, Ohio arena, where the Heels stunk it up against George Mason. The Tar Heels looked like a bunch of cry babies. Even old Roy was tearing up.
The Heels need to face the fact that they played like crap against a lesser team. Tyler Hansbrough disappeared down low, the Heels couldn’t hit from three point range and they turned the ball over like a bunch of butter-fingered high schoolers. The team, starting four freshman, had a great year. But they didn’t play their best on Sunday.
Goodbye winter
Sunday was the last day of winter. Good bye. Good riddance. Yet Julie Blunder tells us that it could snow on Monday night or Tuesday because it’s going to get cold again.
Catnap, yes, that’s the Exxon. Geez, I didn’t realize the clerk was so scary.
syntax, that’s very interesting. if the clerk is off duty a.p.d., what do you think the chances are that he’ll be charged with anything?
damn.
i think – i could be wrong – that some if not all of the night clerks who work at that exxon station are off-duty a.p.d. officers. every time i’ve ever gone into that exxon station for coffee on my way to work, the clerks are always packing semi-automatic pistols. not concealed, either – they’re hip-holstered.
basically, even stealing a packet of sugar from that particular exxon station is a bloody stupid thing to do.
Is that the Exxon near the overpass close to downtown?
I used to go in there late at night when I worked til 1 a.m. At least I did until I saw that the clerk that was giving everybody a hard time was wearing a gun. Then I started buying my beer earlier in the day. That guy was scarier than the customers and that was a dicey part of town back then.
Restless, I did see Roy’s reaction. I did not see exactly what Rayshawn was doing, but I’m sure he was mugging after hitting that 3-pointer.
Did you see Roy scalding the team at that first timeout in the second half, right after they’d turned the ball over like five times in a row? He was blasting them. He was livid. He was trying everything in the book to get through to them, and he just couldn’t do it.
The guys didn’t show heart, didn’t leave everything they had out on the floor, and that’s what was so frustrating to me.
Ash
Did you see Roy run onto the floor to give Terry a "push" after he hit the trey to tie the game? The cameras didn’t show it but according to Dick Enberg (sp?), Terry was hamming for a photo op. I would have run on the court too, to kick his ass. What in the world was he thinking?
I guess GM played well, Restless. But I would have felt better about it if the Heels had shown some intensity, had done a better job of not turning the ball over, had shot the effing ball better than 30-some percent.
Our Heels didn’t look great but i think that GM played well – great defense that took Tyler out of the game. And the fat ass center, who could move better than you’d think, did us in. I saw a post game video of an emotional Roy Williams taking the blame for the loss. He’s a class act. More than i can say for Coach K who has sold his soul to Chevy and American Express. I guess since he turned down the Lakers job he figures he needs to make up the difference he lost in pay in crappy commercials.
