I’ve never actually listened to Slipknot, but I’ve been working with teenagers for 10 years now. The band has remained a gothculturedeathmetal favorite among the 12-17ers for a decade.
Other bands that have had the same staying power with the rebelteen set: Pantera, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, The Misfits, Black Sabbath, Black Flag. I’m sure this list is hopelessly un-hip, that there are myriad subrockers I’m blissfully unaware of as well.
i never really thought too much of slipknot – i initially wrote them off as being a bit too derivative of mr. bungle, but after seeing them performing on conan o’brien, i became a fan. yes, i am a maggot. a rather laid-back maggot at that, but a maggot. i’m not weird about it or anything; i don’t write their lyrics in sharpie on my trapper keeper, nor do i force my mom to listen to them in the minivan while she gives me a ride to soccer practice, but i do like slipknot.
