Shuler’s visit to Sri Lanka gets notice

A piece written by journalist Jim Luce about U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler’s visit to Sri Lanka was recently put up at Huffington Post, and a number of people, including loyal reader Ricky, have pointed me to it. It seems that folks were impressed by Shuler’s visit and comments. Others see it as a way for him to burnish foreign policy credentials as he weighs a possible run for U.S. Senate.

The Huffington Post piece doesn’t give me enough context to really judge what’s going on. Why did Shuler visit? The story doesn’t answer. Why should people in Shuler’s mountain North Carolina district care about what’s going on in Sri Lanka? Story doesn’t say. 

I’d like to know more. Much more. Anyone?
