short_street_cakes_2014Awesome! Press release:

On Mardi Gras day, Tuesday, March 4th, 2014, from 5pm to 8pm, Short Street Cakes, Asheville’s source for all-natural, scratch-made, southern-style birthday cakes, wedding cakes, and cupcakes, will celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Cake Shop with a block party and raffle to benefit Pawnstorm, Hall Fletcher Elementary’s innovative Chess Team.

Co-hosted by Urban Orchard Cider Bar, the Mardi Gras Block Party is an opportunity for Short Street Cakes to thank the community for their support with free Birthday Cake, Cocktails, and Mardi Gras Beads. Short Street Cakes will be launching their newly expanded 2014 cake and pie menu, and Urban Orchard will be serving up a special Mardi Gras Cider brew across the street, with all proceeds going to Pawnstorm!

Abu Disarray will DJ at the Cake Shop and there will be live music and food trucks at the Cider Bar. Miss Glo will craft a signature cocktail. The raffle commences at 7pm at the Cake Shop- participants don’t have to be present to win. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5 and are for sale at the Cake Shop all month, or at the door.

Raffle Prizes include:

King Cake from Short Street Cakes, Copies of Cake Ladies by Jodi Rhoden, a massage session from Sarah Danforth, T-shirts from The Gas Up, A $25 gift certificate to Harvest Records, and items from 1000faces coffee, Bari Salon, Villagers, Wood and Spoon, 7 Ton Letterpress, Image 420, Gas Up, and many more to come!

Hall Fletcher Elementary, located at 60 Ridgelawn Road in East-West Asheville, in addition to being Asheville’s smallest public elementary school and a magnet school for science, math, and technology, serves the highest proportion of minority, low-income, and special-needs students of any school in the city. As such, the benefits that chess brings to children’s self-esteem, intellectual development, and life skills could not be more critical.

Pawnstorm, Hall Fletcher’s Chess Team, was founded and is coached by third grade teacher Brian Randall. Enthusiasm for chess has swept the school, with many of the third, fourth and fifth graders becoming experts in the game, while kids as young as kindergarten are honing their expertise. The Mardi Gras fundraiser will support after-school chess coaching, travel to tournaments, and purchasing team shirts.

Handmade, all-natural, traditional Southern King Cakes, complete with a baby trinket hidden inside, are also available at the Cake Shop through Mardi Gras, March 4th. The cost is $25 for a Medium sized cake (serves 15) and $48 for a large (serves 30).

For more information and ordering go to www.shortstreetcakes.com. Short Street Cakes is located at 225 Haywood Road in East-West Asheville. The mission of Short Street Cakes is to add meaning to life’s celebrations by providing beautiful, delicious, all-natural, scratch-made cakes, and in so doing, generate a sustainable livelihood for our employees, educate the community about traditional foodways, and support the local food and agriculture economy.

Best cakes in town – at least two of our family members request one for our birthday each year. We wish them another 5+ years of success 🙂
