Verve magazine, Asheville’s newest slick glossy mag, has produced a couple of issues. From what I’ve seen, the magazine writes only about local women. And here’s the rumor control part: I’ve heard that writers are only allowed to use women as sources for stories.

So it’s all women, all the time. My questions — is this true? If so, what do you think? Good idea or no?

Well, the first issue looks really sharp. I like most of the articles.

I have to take issue with one article, though, which is a profile of a local mom trying to save money on the groceries, talking about how she "tries to" buy organic when she can but all the prices are so high and she can only do so much. This is all fine and good, and it’s a perfectly legit angle for an article. However, according to the article, this woman, struggling mightily against the forces of today’s difficult economy, lives in Biltmore Lake, for crying out loud! I wish they would have shown a photo of this woman’s (large, expensive) home!

I realize that Verve will angle for the deep pockets here (there is a full-page ad for Fletcher BMW right up front in the first issue), but maybe Verve should just leave the "it’s so hard in today’s economy" stories to another publication.

I question the fact that they use "only" women as sources. If you look in the latest issue you will see Hector Contrares and his mojito’s featured. There might an exception because of his wife Bonnie who knows!
