Construction work is ongoing at the old location of The Hop in the Woolsy Dip along Merrimon Avenue. The renovation promises to turn the old ice cream shop into a smoker’s haven.

Bruce’s Pipe Shop, just up a ways along Merrimon, is moving into the old building. The pipe shop says it will turn the place into a tobacco-lovers retreat.

The pipe shop has been long favored by Asheville’s pipe and cigar smokers. If you’ve ever ventured into the aromatic environs, you’ll find a fine humidor stocked with a dizzying array of stogies. The shop is also well-known for its “liar’s bench,” a place were newbies are asked to sit and tell a tall tale in order to get their picture added to the hundreds of others on its wall. Several members of Asheville’s law enforcement community have frequented the shop for years.

I talked briefly with the pipe shop folks, who told me that with the recent ban on smoking in bars and restaurants, Bruce’s plans to position itself as the last bastion of puffery. There will be a couple of smoking rooms and plenty of smokes to choose from.

Smoke ’em if you got ’em.

As for the old Hop building renovation, it is the absolute WORST concrete site work I have seen in Asheville! The curb and sidewalk at the intersection of Murdock and Merrimon is in no way City standard. There is no radius, just 45 degree angles. For weeks, a piece of rebar has stuck out of the ground ready to pop a tire (or worse) seriously injury someone who my trip and fall. Building Safety requires that all rebar be capped with a safety orange cap. No such measures are in place. How has this passed inspection or permitting for that matter?

SO…no one really know what is happening at the old Hop location? Wondered why the work slowed down. A great location for….something.

As B&B Tobacconists cannot move, they are renovating the shop they have … and having recently stopped in I can assure you these changes are fantastic.

Ah yes, the Brass Tap and Athens. Thanks for helping me remember. And Ike’s was next to The Hop. Loved that place. Never was the same when he moved to the shopping center that now has Steinmart.

I thought the convenience store was across the street, where Western Auto and now CVS later came. But maybe I’m just getting old and my memory’s failing me.

Serendipity Square. Also home to the Carrot Patch (moving progressively north on US25 as the decades tick by) and Cross Stitch Corner (not sure what happened to them)….

The place now occupied by Vinnie’s was the ATHENS restaurant. A pretty good breakfast served there. The convenience store on Merrimon where Atlanta Bread Company now sits was known as a HOP-IN Convenience store in the late 80’s, before closing. Don’t remember the name of the vacuum store, but I do remember it being there. The bar either, for that matter. I believe the entire property is owned by Chris Peterson.

Alas..we at Bruce’s (now B&B Tobacconists) are unable to move to The Hop building. There was a paucity of parking set aside for out shop. So we are staying where we are. Thank you for the notice, however!

The convenience store was called Hop In and the sleazy bar was also called The Brass Tap (among other things). And yep, i remember when Bruce was in Serendipity Square. Someone on facebook has a page with pictures from that era and before.

Does anyone remember when Bruce’s was in Serendipity Square? It was among a quaint little group of shops located at the corner of Merrimon and Edgewood, where today stands the much-less-charming-and-way-bigger shopping center, across from Atlanta Bread Company.

That was back when what is now Vinnie’s was a greek diner (which before that was a gas station, I think). And a Seven-Eleven, plus a vacuum cleaner shop and a sleazy little bar, occupied the space where Atlanta Bread is. Would love to see some pix from back then…some 20+ years ago.

I cannot think of a better use for that building…except maybe a drive-thru ice cream parlor…oh! Man, this is brilliant!

    A garage!

Seriously though – it is a great space and the smokers ought to take their haven very seriously…and it’s convenient to Weaver Park for those post-North Asheville Little League game victory cigars.

    Excellent.
