From CQ Politics, on the re-election prospects of U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, a Democrat, who is running against Republican Jeff Miller:

A newly-released internal poll conducted for the Congressman’s campaign showed the incumbent with a strong 17 point lead over Miller as of mid-July.

The poll, which was in the field July 8-13, showed Shuler just above the 50 percent mark with 51 percent. Miller took 34 percent and 15 percent were undecided. The live telephone survey of 500 likely voters was conducted by the Democratic firm Anzalone Liszt Research and had a 4.4 point margin of error.

Those results are very different from an automated poll conducted in late July by the conservative-leaning think tank Civitas Institute. That poll showed Shuler barely ahead, 45 percent to 44 percent. The Civitas poll, which surveyed 400 registered voters, showed Shuler with an upside down favorability rating while the Anzalone Liszt poll pegged Shuler’s rating at 62 percent favorable 32 percent unfavorable.

CQ Politics currently rates the general election race Likely Democratic.

I'm just a bit skeptical about this poll. Why should a democrat, albeit a conservative one at that, take such a commanding lead in this economy and with the kind of angst voters feel all over the country? It doesn't make sense to me.

Although many people in Asheville have criticized Heath Shuler for his position on health care and other issues, remember that he has voted with the Democratic caucus 85% of the time. So in short, unless you want to be represented by a republican, get out and vote for him.

Told everyone he was going to win this, downtown Asheville DOES NOT rule all of WNC.
