Reports are still coming in. Haywood Rd. was closed for investigation from Battlecat east according to the most recent report.

From Mountain Xpress this morning:

According to people on the scene, there was a young male and female riding a motorcycle involved in an accident on Haywood Road. The male was taken by ambulance immediately; the female was worked on by paramedics at the scene for a while. It is not always clear how accidents like these happen, but it is important to remember that no matter what vehicle you drive, there are always chances of incidents occurring. With this being said, before you hit the road, go ahead and compare moped insurance, for your benefit and others on the road. Another good choice to make would be purchasing a dash cam for your vehicle in the case of an accident or any other issue, you can purchase these from BlackBoxMyCar. This will ensure you are protected while you are on the road if anything was to unfortunately happen. You just never know, so it is best to cover your back just in case.

Haywood Road is currently closed for the investigation.

The conditions of either of the riders has not been released as of this post. Stay tuned for updates.

From the AC-T today at 2:40:

An afternoon motor vehicle accident has claimed one life.

Police say a minivan collided with a moped on Haywood Road near the point where the street veers sharply north toward the French Broad River.

The identities of those involved with the accident were not immediately known and emergency personnel are still at the scene.

Two teenage females, ages 16 and 17 were on the moped, police said. At least one person was sent to the hospital in serious condition.

The road is closed from the intersection with Michigan Avenue to the west to the point the road curves at Beverly Road.

More from the AC-T at 3:57 p.m.:

Witnesses told police the driver of a motorcycle was driving recklessly and carelessly before a fatal collision this afternoon at Swannanoa Avenue.

Two females were on the 2002 Honda, which broadsided a van as it turned east onto Haywood Road, according to police, who have not yet released the names of those involved.

Two other people involved in the crash, including a child who was in the van, were taken to Mission Hospital for what police said were non life-threatening injuries.

Pete Lutz, who lives in a house on Haywood Road, about 50 feet from the crash said he approached the scene after the collision and saw one person lying in the roadway near the motorcycle, which was ‘shredded to pieces,’ and another victim 30 feet up the road.

Police are conferring with the DA’s office to determine if charges will be filed.

The name of the woman who was killed has been released: Mariah Danielle Lance, 18. From the AC-T:

Police identified the woman killed in a motorcycle crash that injured two others this afternoon on Haywood Road.

Witnesses told police the driver of the motorcycle, Mariah Danielle Lance, 18, of Asheville was driving recklessly and carelessly before a fatal collision this afternoon at Swannanoa Avenue.

Lance was pronounced dead at Mission Hospital shortly after the crash, reported at 12:42 p.m., according to police.

Her passenger, Hayley Rian Smith, of Candler, was taken to Mission for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.

A child in the van, driven by Dore Benitez, of Black Mountain, was also taken to Mission with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The youth and woman were on a 2002 CBR600 Honda, which broadsided the van as it turned west onto Haywood Road, according to police.

Police said Lance was driving southeast ‘in a careless and reckless manner’ and had passed “at least one vehicle in a no-passing zone.”

Haywood Rd. is now open.

Given that your later updates make it clear that the vehicle involved was a motorcycle, I think you might want to update your headline as well.

Also, what the heck does “from Battlecat east” mean in your opening paragraph?

Nate, headline changed. Battlecat is a coffeeshop on Haywood–written more clearly, it means the lower end of Haywood approaching the river district was closed.

Gotcha! I knew the old Izzy’s there had changed hands and names, but didn’t realize it was called Battlecat. Hopefully Mattel doesn’t come after them for He-Man trademark infringement!
