WLOSers had a story Thursday night about a lesbian couple that’s getting threats about their proposed Rutherford County campground, Camp Lickalotta. Or maybe it’s not proposed, but people want it shut down. I don’t know.

But WLOSers talked to a couple of people who said the name of the camp was just too much. Even kids know that Camp Lickalotta refers to something sexual, they said. That was about the extent of the WLOSers’ story. Here’s more from the Gaston Gazette:

The founders of a camp geared toward gay, lesbian and transgender nature lovers have received threats, but won’t back down from their dream.

Joanie Beasley, who along with Nancy Leedy developed the idea for the camp, said the couple had received threats since a news article was published Tuesday.

She was not specific on the threats, but said, “We will proceed and take the proper precautions. We are not going anywhere now.”

A call made to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Some residents found the name of the camp disagreeable, but Beasley said the name — Camp Lickalotta — would not change.

Leedy said the name was chosen for three reasons. She said the goal of the camp was to:

Lickalotta prejudice.

Lickalotta pollutants.

Lickalotta pessimism.

Aside from threats, the couple has also received requests from other media outlets requesting interviews and say they will continue to talk about the camp.

The proposed camp is located just inside the Rutherford side of the Cleveland-Rutherford county line on N.C. 226.

The newspaper has followed the story here and here as well.

I’m all for Camp Lickalotta. Go grrrls!

This was a hoot, classic WLOS high-larity! I was so disappointed that when the report ended it wasnt tossed back to Larry – I just knew he would be all shocked and preachy to us about it.
