The Asheville Citizen-Times on Tuesday had a short obituary for Morris L. “Mac” McGough and is following up with a news obituary for tomorrow’s newspaper.

I covered McGough when he was pushing hard for the construction of I-26 through Madison County. He was a tireless advocate for that project, which remains the largest (dollar wise) road construction project ever in WNC. (Until they build the I-26 Connector, but who knows when that will ever come to fruition.) A section of I-26 in Madison County is named after McGough.

McGough, whose father was a longtime director of the WNC Community Development Association, was also instrumental in landing state funding for the construction and expansion of the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher (there’s an arena named after him there) and the WNC Farmers Market on Brevard Road.

That’s about all the background I have on McGough right now. More as I get it.

That wasn't his father who was "a longtime director of the WNC Community Development Association," that was Mac himself. He was literally the father of community development in WNC, and was the WNCDA's first director. When he retired, Pat Brinkley held the post.
