Part bar. Part bike shop. 144 Biltmore Ave.

The AC-T’s Carol Motsinger has the story:

But in Asheville, beers and gears are two peas in a pod. The mountains have long boasted a bustling biking community, and local beer is the toast of the town.

The folks at Beer City Bicycles are putting these two favorites together like peanut butter and jelly. The bar and shop on Biltmore Avenue just celebrated its grand opening June 29.

“We wanted to open up a store downtown that was different than the other (bicycle) shops in Asheville,” manager Frank Mandaro said.

The owners used to run Spin-Tech Training in Woodfin and now run the training program out of the Biltmore Avenue location.

And since the store opened at the beginning of June, merchandise is flying off the shelves, he said.

But this unusual pairing isn’t just about being different for the sake of being different. The wood bar in the middle of the shop communicates the shop’s customer service style: relaxed and friendly.

“It takes the pressure off the customer,” Mandaro said of the routine of offering a beverage to people when they walk through the door. “I want to make this a pleasurable experience. That’s the kind of environment we want to have here.”

Mandaro said it helps him better serve a cyclist if he spends some time with the customer at the bar.
