James Mullen, the former UNCA chancellor, is on the move again, according to this story:

Allegheny College on Wednesday named James H. Mullen Jr. as its 21st president, succeeding Richard J. Cook, who is retiring after 12 years.

Mullen, currently president of Elms College, a Catholic, liberal arts school in Chicopee, Mass., was a unanimous choice of Allegheny’s board, according to a news release.

“We are fortunate to have found a new president who has not only broad experience in higher education but a proven track record in leadership roles,” board Chairman Chris Nelson said in a statement.

Mullen has also been chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville and senior vice president of Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

In a statement, Mullen said working for Allegheny College “is a rare privilege in American higher education.”

Cook said Mullen “is a strong match with Allegheny,” and said he would work with Mullen to make for a smooth transition.

Mullen is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. He holds a master of public policy degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a doctorate in higher education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Allegheny College has a student population of about 2,100 and is based in Meadville in Crawford County.
