Here’s the latest e-mail from Asheville City Councilman Gordon Smith. Lots of great information here. I hope folks will take time to fill out an application and spread the word. Mountain Xpress has created a way to follow the Google Asheville discussion on Twitter.

From Gordon:

Hi y’all,

This email is going out to dozens of AVL community leaders, artists, thinkers, businessfolks, and more.

Google is seeking a town in America willing to host a $500 million infrastructure investment – Ultra high speed fiber cable to every home and business. The deadline is March 26th, and Asheville has a lot going on to try to land this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

I’m asking today if you would use your newsletters, email lists, Facebook pages, and Twitter feeds to spread the word about what it is and how people can help. Attached is a quick, one page FAQ.

More information can be found at this website:  http://googleavl.com

We need people in the community to:

1) Fill out an application telling Google why Asheville is a good fit and how they would use this world-class internet connection. Examples include: health care, climate science, education, business, networking, and art. The application is located here.

2) Create online buzz to let Google know we’re here and we’re awesome. Videos, blog posts, Facebook posts, audio – anything creative that will get Google’s attention is going to help our effort.

Thanks for anything you can do to help, and please contact me with any questions.

Gordon Smith

Just sent in a nomination. I am one of many business owners who are doing well competing nationally, but could do much better if we had the broadband like those living in big cities.

    Thanks for encouraging this!
