The UNCA student newspaper, The Blue Banner, is reporting an interesting story about how Ingles’ in-store video rental shops have chosen not to advertise the Oscar-award winning Brokeback Mountain, which comes out on DVD next week.

Ingles a local grocery store chain and video department will card customer’s renting Oscar winner “Brokeback Mountain” and has chosen not to advertise the film which focuses on the relationship between two men.

“I think it’s wrong. I think it’s ridiculous that they are unwilling to take a stand and advertise it”, said Anne Slatton, mass communication lecturer. “They are trying to keep everyone happy. At least they are carrying it.”

Ingles corporate sent out an e-mail March 23 to all video managers telling them not to put posters up anywhere, not to list it on the marquee, not to make announcements about it. They are also checking identification and placing a small sign on the shelf that says must be over 17 to rent, according to an Ingles employee.

The story appears a little thin. The story hangs a lot on the corporate e-mail, but doesn’t explain how the Blue Banner obtained it. No Ingles officials are quoted. But it is interesting.

…And how about proper usage of possessive vs. plural? Plus they got the release date wrong; the movie’s out on the 4th, not the 14th. Still, pretty crummy move by Ingles. Visit the store and you’ll see any number of violent R-rated movies advertised, but heaven forbid they advance the "homosexual movement," as Mr. Westbrook puts it. Violence and gore are moot points with the righties, but not consensual love between two people of the same sex.

This is the "journalism" produced by one of the country’s – no, the Western Hemisphere’s – great liberal arts universities (see the latest rankings published with gushing praise monthly in the Citizen-Times)? One can only wonder about the quality of journalism faculty at UNCA when ink hits paper like this.
