Do newspaper endorsements matter any more? I’m not sure, but the Citizen-Times has been continuing the tradition this election year. Last week, the newspaper offered a non-endorsement endorsement of U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler. It was an oddly written piece that mentioned Shuler’s opponent, Carl Mumpower, more than it talked about Shuler.

Today, the Citizen-Times picks David Gantt over Nathan Ramsey for chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. The newspaper says it believes Gantt will aggressive work to control growth and development in the county. Gantt is the Democrat and Ramsey is the Republican.

For the board of commissioners seats, the newspaper recommends incumbents Bill Stanley and Carol Peterson because of their “experience.” They’re both Democrats. Then newcomers K. Ray Bailey, another Dem, and John Carroll, a Republican, get the newspaper’s blessing.

Not really surprising, but worth noting.

As for Gantt controlling growth and development. We need both of those to make this a great area to live in and bring jobs. Keep turning away chain stores from the city of Asheville and you will get what you asked for. You will get a sleepy little town in the mountains populated by vagrants and transients while south Asheville will reap all the rewards of growth and prosperity.

Who reads that newspaper anymore. People hate that ink pigment that gets on your hands when reading it.

The news is free online. LOL
