Bulldog, keeping up with the news, says:
Here’s the scam: You receive a semi-literate email from a member of an African “royal family” asking you to send them thousands of dollars so that they may transfer millions to a U.S. account. For your assistance, the email promises to reward you with a couple of million bucks from the transfer.
Now who is so dumb-ass stupid to fall for that?
How about George Edward Moore, 48 going on 10, director of an African-American community center in Waynesville, who sent the “prince” $15,000, then unsuccessfully tried to cash a bogus check he received in return. Not only that, the 15 grand was a donation from the Waynesville Kiwanis Club for purchase of playground equipment at the Afro-Am center. Moore was indicted this week on numerous charges related to his high IQ and fiscal acumen.
On the heels of the recent Papertown f-ups (director embezzling funds, her replacement cashing checks made out to the organization, Canton town council’s giving away thousands of dollars and exercising no oversight in its use) is it any wonder that Haywood County is rapidly overtaking Madison County as the laughingstock of the mountains.
In the old days, the Citizen-Times used to have an inside joke for stories about Haywood County. Usually they involved a snake-handling preacher getting bitten, or the sheriff’s revealing pronouncement on a trailer park shooting that “alcohol may have been involved.” The newsroom called them “Haywood Hijinks.” Looks like nothing has changed west of the river.
