The Asheville Citizen-Times, and parent company Gannett, have been furloughing employees since the start of the year. The employees have been ordered to take one week off in the first quarter, and another week off in the second quarter.

So if you have news or other matters to communicate with the newspaper, and you receive an automated response like the one below, know that it’s an employee on furlough. I’ve obviously left out specific names and email addresses, because those can change – depending on who’s on furlough.

I will be out of the office without e-mail access or other available contact until Monday, May 11. If you need to talk to an editor about an event before Monday, please contact XXXX, [email protected]. If you need to talk to someone about a community news story or event before Monday, please contact XXXX, [email protected].

    Ted,
With only 10 hours of furlough compared to the weeks required by Gannett, I don’t plan to say very much. It’s a little under a day and a half and not really even worth mentioning. Heck, I’ve had the flu and been out of work for longer than the state furlough.
