Thanks for posting this, Ash, and thanks for the heads up about the Asheville Savings deal, AVL. In comparing the two online, it looks like each has its bonuses. However, I’d lean more toward Bank of Asheville, as it sounds like they’ll refund all ATM fees, while Asheville Savings won’t refund other banks’ ATM fees. Asheville Savings does offer a better rate if the requirements aren’t met, but considering the requirements are pretty simple, that shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Still, any more input is welcome. I’d love to move my money to a local bank.

I’ve been using the Asheville Savings Bank plan since July and am quite satisfied with it (they have a branch in Hendersonville that I signed up with). You have to make sure you know when the cut off date for the current month is though if you save up your 10 POS transactions for the last minute, because they change it each month. Here are the general details and link:

    THE BEST CHECKING
5.00% Annual Percentage Yield (APY)* interest on your checking balance, up to $25,000.
Use any bank’s ATM free, any time, anywhere nationwide
    Free Visa CheckCard*
    No monthly service fee
    No minimum balance
Free initial supply of standard checks
    No-fee travelers checks
    Optional overdraft line of credit**
    Available for consumer accounts only
    $50 opening deposit
