George Beverly Shea, a gospel music singer and songwriter who worked alongside the Rev. Billy Graham for decades as the musical voice of the Graham ministry, will celebrate his 100th birthday on Feb. 1.

Shea has recorded more than 70 albums of music, and his voice is sweet thunder. You really should listen to his recordings some time. His voice is amazing.

There will be a private birthday party in Asheville for Shea on Feb. 2, according to the Charlotte Observer. In a column on Saturday, writer Tim Funk notes that the party will be held at The Cove out in Swannanoa, and that there will be chocolate cake. No word on whether the 90-year-old Graham will make it down from his Montreat home to help Shea celebrate.

Go here to listen to Shea’s rolling bass as he sings How Great Thou Art and other gospel standards.
