Former Asheville Citizen-Times Managing Editor Julie Martin is now managing editor at the Wilmington Star News in Wilmington, N.C. The newspaper just hired former Asheville Citizen-Times City Editor Robyn Tomlin as the newspaper’s executive editor.

As Robyn settles in, she’s blogging hard about what she’s up to. Here’s Robyn talking to Julie about what she does at the newspaper.

Here’s a sample:

Q: What exactly does a managing editor do?

A: I manage the newsgathering in the newsroom, the people and the process, so we have a solid plan each day for what we’re going to do and who’s going to do it. We want to cover breaking news as well as produce enterprise and investigative projects. I collaborate with the folks who run the universal (copy) desk and the multimedia team so they know what the reporters are working on and we have a single vision of where we need to head. I run the morning and afternoon budget meetings where we plan what’s going on the Web site throughout the day and in the print paper the next day. With breaking news we’ll put up one graph if that’s all we’ve got and a Google map, then continually develop it until we’ve exhausted the story. We put every story on the Web site as soon as it’s finished. I also coordinate training for the newsroom and handle the internship program.
