From a loyal reader:

Several people I know think, as do I, that the WLOS 11pm newscast last Friday (June 5) was a videotaped replay of the newscast they did an hour earlier on WMYA. Can you confirm this?  Do they do this on a regular basis?  Has it occurred before?  Don’t you think a TV station should be required by the FCC to inform its viewers if they are passing off a taped newscast as ”live?”

Recording segments for TV and Radio has been going on for years. When you watch HLN on Cable, Sportscenter and other programs on ESPN, those are routinely pieces of recorded segments which are slapped together. Radio Newscasts in this market have been recorded too. Whole Radio Shows are pre-recorded as well. Granted, there may be no use of the word "LIVE" when its not, but chanes are what you’re listening to of watching may be taking place long after the employees of the radio or TV Station have already gone home for the day. When you’re listening to that football, baseball or basketball game on the radio, don’t assume there’s someone in the station playing all of those local commercials either….it’s all automated. It’s a sad reality in the media in recent years with staffs being cut to bare bones levels.

Nothing (or not much, teevee news-wise) worse than trying too hard to make a look-live look "live," only to have the tape jam after the anchor says, "Let’s go to News 13’s Rick Gall at the courthouse. Rick…"

If we say it’s live it’s live. If an anchor tosses to a reporter and says they are "live" they are always live. If they toss to them and don’t say "live" and you don’t see a "live" bug then it’s not live. No one is trying to deceive anyone. The reasoning behind not being live in the field is often because we can’t get a signal to Mount Pisgah and we have to drive the story back. The only time a news show might be taped (which is very very rare) is at 10 if there is a ballgame on. The reason is both the 10 and the 11 use the same studio so you can’t do two shows at once. Whoever doubts this should be there at 1 in the morning when we go on the air because of a sporting event that dealys the 11pm news. I hope this helps.

Perhaps, since they do utilize much of the same material.

What gets me is when they present reporter’s news stories as "live" when they are actually taped. I also hate the canned banter and questions between the anchor and reporters, especially at the end of a report. It is all pre-planned and scripted, including the questions, and it mostly shows as such. One would think the reporters would be able to answer follow-up questions about the story they just presented.

WLOS News is very "dumbed down" and only glosses over important stories. In spite of its shortcomings, I think WLOS is perhaps better than the Citizen-Times.

Russ Bowen, the male anchor for that show, was on vacation that week. If you had looked harder, you would see that they have different backgrounds, 10 has MY40 in Background, 11 has NEWS 13 in Background! And don’t even try to say, the shows should be different, while I agree, with the cutbacks at news 13 and everyone doing more, AND WITH NO TRUE LEADERSHIP IN THE NEWSROOM, it is amazing they don’t tape all their newscasts! TRY SUPPORTING THE POOR PEOPLE AT NEWS 13, TRY SUPPORTING ALL THAT WORK IN THE MEDIA RIGHT NOW, WE NEED IT! Quality is at an all-time low and it will take a long time to get it BACK!

    I wouldn’t be surprised.

I would ask the news director and station manager for an official reply about this.

    Their response will be interesting.

They pass off taped stuff as "live" quite a bit actually. Not entire shows, as far as I know, but sometimes the "live shot" of a reporter introducing a story was actually taped a couple of hours before the newscast. I believe it’s called a "look live".

While I don’t think it’s a good idea for WLOS to be repeating taped shows and telling people they are live, I don’t know if that’s something that the FCC would deal with. There are taped repeats of live shows on all the time, and usually they do not make any attempt to tell the viewer that they are not actually live, unless it’s a call-in show where they want to prevent people from calling.
