Fifteen students from Dickson Elementary School recently wrote essays and submitted them to NPR’s In Character series. It was a class project to learn how to write persuasively, and they used books they’d read as inspiration.

It’s a great project, and a great little NPR story. Click here to listen.

Here’s what NPR says about the story:

For our series In Character, we’ve asked listeners to tell us about their own favorite characters by submitting essays to the In Character blog.

An elementary school in Asheville, N.C., turned that request into a literacy project for its fifth-graders.

One of the students, an 11-year-old who’s been in foster care for the past four years, wrote about his affinity for the protagonist of A Dog’s Life: Autobiography of a Stray, by Ann M. Martin.
