A new sandwich shop fills the West Asheville emptiness left in the wake of the closing of Viva Deli. It’s not taking over Viva’s building (that spot goes to Oyster House Brewing), but it does fill that place in the local ecosystem, serving hoagies, sandwiches and even breakfast sandwiches at 8 a.m.

From the Asheville Scene blog:

And while there’s no Italian on the regular menu at the Asheville Sandwich Company (though one may pop up on the rotating list of specials, promised owner Brian Good), there is a very good version of a bahn mi hoagie, with sweet-glazed pork belly (also available with tofu) on a crusty roll with pickled vegetables. There’s also a shrimp po boy with pico de gallo, a fried-chicken sandwich with Sriracha mayo and a vegetarian sandwich with brie, toasted pumpkin seeds, roasted pear chutney, honey and arugula.

The tiny sandwich shop, perched on the edge of a mini strip mall that also holds a convenience store, opens at 8 a.m. (Monday through Saturday), serving breakfast sandwiches like the South of the Border with potatoes, eggs and pico de gallo.  Local eggs come from Far Side Farms and the sausage is house made.

Lunch is served until 3, with a menu devoted almost exclusively to generously sized sandwiches, all under $8. The most expensive item is a house-roasted prime rib sandwich with caramelized onions and cheddar at $7.75.

The Asheville Sandwich Company is located at 202 State Street, off of Hanover Street in West Asheville.
