The Asheville Downtown Market, which is home to a restaurant, consigment sellers and a grocery store on South French Broad Avenue, is going to close at the end of the month, according to this Craigslist posting. I’ve got calls out to confirm.

UPDATE: Building co-owner Bobby Potts sent a note to vendors two days ago alerting consignment sellers that First Bank is foreclosing on his loan. Potts said he got behind on payments on the building he and his partner bought in 2007 for $2.7 million. While the consignment sellers are out, the bank may be willing to work with lease-holders Pho Fusion, Amazing Savings and Hi Fi coffee shop, though those details have not been worked out yet.

From Craigslist:

First, I have to say that I rent a consignment booth at the “Downtown Market”. Other than that, I DO NOT have ANY affiliation with that company.

Second, I DO NOT know how much money is involved, regarding the purchase or lease of this property. I listed $9,000,000 because I had to enter something in that field and this was the highest “clean” (trailing zeros) number I could enter.

Now… This is currently public knowledge… the Asheville “Downtown Market” will close on June 30th. The building provides LOTS of consignment areas with Renters paying monthly fees. There is a Vietnamese restaurant, a coffee shop (which makes most everything from scratch, some it is organic), a few rented office spaces and an “Amazing Savings” grocery store — the “anchor” store for the “Downtown Market”.
(This grocery store is the only one in this part of town and is relied upon by LOTS of local residents.)

Society is hungry for this particular business model and the “Downtown Market” is stocked, has lots of Renters and is ready to continue to offer what the community needs.
If you’re ready to not only invest in your future but to also be a hero for the community, please contact the “Downtown Market.”

Thanks to loyal reader B for the heads-up.

In reference of this Downtown Market Foreclosure, what do you think of a business, who is still selling his business + rent at a price, put the ad on Craigslist, as if nothing has happened? Is he trying to sell a lemon?
What would you do? knowing of this fact?

Just check on Craigslist/forsale/business and you will see this ad.

The story checked out, Pam. The Downtown Market is in foreclosure, and planning to close out the consignment business of its 70 or so vendors at the end of the month.

Craigslist is not where I would ever go for news or gossip…..it's a site one goes to to look for a rental, home to buy, yard sale, or a place for sex hook-ups. It's unmonitored, unverified and often very sketchy. Many of the post on CL are not even real or local, they are the product of some "bot" on the other side of the world. Jason, this seems more than just a little "odd"

Since when is a random post on craigslist a credible source for any type of news?

I really hope this is some awful gossip…. Who would choose Craigslist as their legitimate seeming soapbox?! Oh, got to make a call tomorrow 🙁
