contrafestThis looks like a fun event:

JOIN US FOR A DAY OF MUSIC, DANCING, AND FARM FUN!
CONTRAFEST 2014–Saturday, May 24, Noon to 9

Here at Randall Glen we make Memorial Day weekend a time to remember! Take a hayride up the mountain to our farm, then join in for a day of mountain music, Contra dancing, family fun, good food, and good times.

What is Contra Dancing? Contra, or Country Dancing, is an old form of folk dancing brought here by the settlers. It’s like square dancing, but the couples form up into lines instead of squares. Like square dancing, Contra is danced to Bluegrass or Appalachian music and follows set figures that are called out by a caller. Even if you’ve never done Contra Dancing before, just jump right in! It’s fun to dance, and it’s easy to learn. The caller walks you through each dance before it starts, and before you know it you’ll be dancing like an old hand.

Not a dancer? Just settle back. Contra is fun to watch and the music is great for listening. Best of all, it’s happening in the open air on our Games Lawn, with our antique log Games Barn for a stage and a breathtaking mountain view all around you.

Besides great bands there’s a day full of other good fun. For kids there’s face painting, a haystack for climbing, grass sledding, and Pony Swing races with prizes for all. Take a farm tour and visit with our friendly farm animals-we have goats, pigs, sheep, horses, beautiful Jersey cows, Shiloh the llama, and ducks and chickens everywhere. And May is baby time at Randall Glen! You’ll see baby goats, lambs, chicks, ducklings, and all sorts of other baby critters.

Try out the gem mining and find some treasure-sapphires, rubies, amethyst, emeralds, and lots of other gems. Then go for a prize in the big Cornhole Tournament! There are raffles, too, for great prizes like mountain trail rides, gem buckets, and more. Then when evening comes we’ll light a huge bonfire.

You won’t go hungry, either! Our farm’s food truck will be serving up farm-smoked barbecue, farmhouse foods, and vegetarian and gluten-free specials. Feast on dishes like Baby Back Ribs and Pulled Pork, Slammed Pinto Beans, Chicken and Dumplings, Wild Harvest Salad, and Strawberries and Cream. And when the bonfire lights up, of course there’ll be S’Mores!

Contrafest 2014 is happening on Saturday, May 24 from Noon to 9. Give us a call at 828-683-5758 to get tickets in advance, or just come on out. Advance tickets are $10 and tickets at the door are $15. Kids 12 to 16 are half price and kids under 12 are free. And for you Early Birds there’s a special price-from March 1 to April 1, tickets are just $9!
