Zelda will be celebrated in Asheville on Thursday. Check out the press release from loyal reader Jim:

Zelda Fitzgerald, “The First Flapper,” ushered in the roaring 20s. She was a force in one of America’s first power couples, living fast and flamboyantly. She bravely endured the stigmas of being a woman with a mental illness, and suffered for her art and creations. Sadly, Zelda died before her time in a horrible fire in Asheville.

There have been no local public celebrations of her life. Her tragedies and triumphs sometimes nearly forgotten. Until now.

During the first Asheville City Council meeting in March (March 8th), a proclamation will be read declaring Thursday, March 10, 2016 Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald Day.

Our aim is to honor Zelda’s spirit and sense of adventure, two things that Asheville is known and loved for.

How to participate?

Come to one of our literary readings at 6:30pm at both Malaprops Bookstore, (55 Haywood Street) and Firestorm Café and Books (610 Haywood Road).

Visit Orbit DVD (781 Haywood Road) during business hours on March 10th for some exciting video gaming with The Legend of Zelda. Yes, the Princess of Hyrule is named after Zelda Fitzgerald.

And remember to Come party with us at the Masonic Temple, 80 Broadway Street, at 8pm. Dance to The Firecracker Jazz Band. Bid on the awesome art during our silent auction. And be sure to dress up in your best 1920s attire.

All proceeds go to Aurora Arts Studio, a creative space that helps people affected with mental illness create works of art.
