From hvillescoop.com:

The public is invited to get a rare glimpse at the Presidential Medal of Freedom that President Lyndon Johnson bestowed on Carl Sandburg nearly 50 years ago.

The medal, which is still conferred each year by the president, is recognized as the highest civilian award for service during peacetime. Sandburg’s medal is on display in a museum exhibit in the bookstore of the famed writer’s Flat Rock home. Sandburg was one of 30 citizens who received the medal in 1964, a group that also included Helen Keller, Walt Disney and John Steinbeck.

The medal will be on display through May 2011.
