Carl Mumpower, councilman

From the desk of Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower:

You may have seen the notice this week that Wal-Mart, Toys-Are-Us, Target, Walgreens, and a host of other merchants have pulled an ‘illegal alien’ costume from their shelves.

Following protests by a parade of illegal illegal alien advocacy organizations, the management of these companies put on their Halloween “legal coward” costume and rolled over to the pressure.

Each of the enabling organizations seemed to have the same message – that the costumes in question offended those people in this country illegally who were just trying to work hard and get along.

Like me, you may be one of those offended by the fact that people can cross our borders, milk our education, health care, and social services systems, and then get a free pass from our elected officials.

Ever wondered where the term “illegal alien” came from?  It is the language that has been used for years by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and their predecessors.  It is meant as a descriptive term for reality – these folks are here illegally and are alien to the country.

Undocumented worker is double speak for  – “Let’s pretend that is is OK to cross our borders illegally, employ workers with fake ID illegally, or otherwise conspire to usurp the rule of law – illegally.”

It must be challenging to be a grade-A douche bag. Let’s hear it for Carl’s tenacity, there’s a man that takes being a jerk to a whole new level.

Scare your trick-or-treaters– dress as Carl Mumpower.

(Remember the creepy ads from last year’s election campaign?)

Duh. In a global economy, Mexico and China are local issues. Do you not notice when all our jobs moved there?

Is this the state of potential leadership in the city of Asheville? Two politicians arguing with each other on web sites, debating issues that are national in scope and solution, and far down any list of local community challenges? Where are the candidates who have a pragmatic vision for Asheville, and a fiscally sound plan to get there?

God, I’m tired of the ex-Student Council officers who are trying to pretend to be Asheville’s new leadership.

Actually, I agree with him completely.
We don’t provide healthcare or government funding for the workers in China – that is a ridiculous comparison.

It is about time that lethal force was authorized at the borders. That is legal, and would stop the traffic pretty quickly. If we can not control the borders, we are not really a sovereign nation, are we??!!

Mumpower issues diatribes, and now Bothwell issues diatribes in response to Mumpower’s. Is this what it’s going to be like when/if both of them are on City Council? As Susan said in an earlier post about Bothwell, "If he is elected to council, he’ll need to man up and learn to let some sh*t roll off his back. Otherwise we’ll all be in for a loooooong 4 years."

Bothwell said, "I have never been asked to leave any function, anywhere, due to anything I have ever said. Ever. In 59 years." Can he clarify what actually happened then at the Young Democrats unity meeting when he spoke against another Democratic candidate?

I find it wildly amusing that Carl repeatedly celebrates the virtues of Wal-Mart—the benefits to average folks, the sales taxes generated, the property taxes paid—and keeps up his drumbeat about illegal workers who supposedly take jobs from Americans.

Um, Carl, have you noticed that Wal-Mart is a mostly Chinese operation these days? Wal-Mart, with it’s main purchasing HQ in China, where people work for meager wages and who are TAKING AWAY JOBS FROM AMERICANS way more than the illegals you decry here.

So, let’s get this straight: people working for poverty wages, even slave labor in other countries, competing with American workers is GOOD. But people who risk life and limb to cross our border with Mexico to work for poverty wages is BAD.

Time to look at the BIG picture Carl. You really can’t have it both ways.
