We didn’t know Ashvegas had roller derby girls. But we do! The Blue Ridge Roller Girls have a cool Web site. We learned that the group just formed this June and the members include Assassinatrix, Break Neck Beck, Liquor Possi, Pabst Smear and Pulp Friction. We’re scared and strangely attracted at the same time.

Here’s what they say about their new league:

Our league is made up of a wonderful core of skaters, all of whom are fiercely committed, dedicated, and strong women…on and off the rink! We are currently recruiting new skaters, making public appearances, and promoting the league, all while training hard for what we hope is our inaugural season in the Spring of 2007!

There is Flat track roller derby in Columbus, Ohio too. Haven’t been to a match yet, but it is in the plans. Don’t know how appropriate it will be for a 6-year-old.

See! It’s one of the fastest growing (or, re-growing) sports in the country. It had its day a couple of decades ago but IT’S BACK. It’s fun. It’s a little silly. Hey! It’s a cheap night out and there are definitely some real athletes out there. Sometimes you can’t tell the bruises from the tattoos but I think they are having fun and competing. What the heck.
