Big Sam

Great story here by Michael Flynn for the Asheville Citizen-Times. This is the Saturday show to see:

Q: Why is New Orleans, or NOLA, horn music so popular everywhere?

A: It’s all about that feeling. When you hear the horns from NOLA, it evokes good times that are omnipresent in New Orleans. Being from NOLA, we hear that music all over the city. We grow up with it, hear it in streets, and it’s the backdrop or soundtrack of all of the events like Mardi Gras, JazzFest and Voodoo Fest that are so uniquely New Orleans. New Orleans horn music is popular because having fun and dancing in the streets is popular — and never goes out of style.

Q: Is there anything notable about Asheville that you like?

A: Asheville has a cool, positive vibe, and we have good friends here (including Toubab Krewe, who I have had the pleasure to perform with). We love Asheville people as they seem so open and welcoming.

Q: Any memorable collaborations on the Jam Cruise?

A: It was phenomenal as BSFN was selected to play the sail-away show, and as we pulled away from the dock, with the ship’s deck packed with true fans, the legendary Meter’s guitarist Leo Nocentelli sat in, along with James Brown’s amazing trombonist Fred Wesley. The stage was set for a run of mind-blowing collaborations, including Maceo Parker and Jojo Herman of Widespread Panic.
