What’s going on at Ophelia’s, the Asheville restaurant on Eagle Street, next to Limone’s?

Ophelia’s World Cafe & Bar started out more than four years ago as Bearly Edible, which borrowed its name from a mobile eatery that used to sell cheap food at Grateful Dead concerts. Bearly Edible didn’t last all that long. The owner closed down, gave the place a new name, facelift and menu, and has been going from there.

A loyal Ashvegas reader says Ophelia’s has been closed. Anybody know what’s going on?

FYI: Bearly Edible is still serving festivals. I just had a quesadilla from them last weekend at Music on the Mountaintop in Boone. It was delicious.

Maybe not the best choice in a name but I think their festival food is a notch better than most festival food (and I've been to quite a few festivals over the years).

Aww! I'm sorry to hear that. I only got to try it once & had a really good experience there.

me – that was a pretty bad name, but I would vote for "Martha Nells" as the worst AVL restaurant name ever (the former Cafe on the Square).

Executive chef Jamie Allredd left in May and they've been struggling with serious financial issues. they're pretty much done.

sadly, you know which ones will be dropping? The smaller cafes that really tried to keep their prices reasonable so that locals could continue to patronize them after tourists had moved on to the next "hot" thing. I loved Ophelias and will miss them greatly.

Bearly Edible will go down in Asheville's history as the worst restaurant name ever.

This is unfortunate, but it's only the tip of the iceberg. Downtown has a wonderful selection of restaurants. But, the pie is only so big. I believe they're gonna start dropping like flies in this economy. JMO.

I heard it was closing a while ago. Something about the head chef leaving town. It sucks. I LOVE Ophelia's.
