Ashvegas reader: Asheville’s a little trashy these days?

Here’s a note from loyal reader Rose. Thoughts?

I’m a loyal reader and thought if anyone would know this, you would, or at least could find out. It’s been great seeing the downtown streets so filled with people but I’m concerned about how trashy many areas look. The city spent a ton of money on signage (which is a very nice addition to the streetscape) but then you walk past areas like the “Historic Lexington Park”) at the corner of Lexington and Walnut and see how trashy it looks.

Granted, it’s mostly a parking lot, but there is litter (a lot of butts) and leaves/weeds piling up. It seems like it wouldn’t take long to clean it up and even just put down some mulch /ground cover. Same thing along Broadway near Tressa’s and the bank of newspaper machines–constant litter and debris.

It may seem trivial, especially when there are more serious issues to deal with but the details matter and the town looks trashy in a lot of areas. So, finally getting to my question–isn’t this the responsibility of the city?

Maybe instead of pointing fingers and expecting other people to do it, some concerned citizens should get together and volunteer to clean up different sections of the city. I’d certainly be willing to put in a few hours to help out.

The City will tell you that the sidewalk and "gutter" in front of a business (in the City) is the responsibility of the business that they front ….

Yes, I agree that there seems to be a lot more trash, overgrown weeds and more graffitti especially near downtown. The stretch of Broadway heading north toward UNCA is bad. Some of the alleys downtown near the Grove Arcade and around Lexington Ave are really filthy.
