More of this…

The relationship between Debbie (Joy Bryant, TV’s Parenthood) and Danny (Michael Ealy, TV’s Almost Human) in About Last Night ranks up with those in (500) Days of Summer and the under-appreciated Definitely, Maybe as one of the better realistic romances in recent cinema.  Calm and mature, the two complement one another nicely and their growth from casual acquaintances to living together is honest nearly each step of the way.

…less of that.

Too bad their friends have to cheapen the experience.  Bernie (Kevin Hart) and Joan (Regina Hall) are of the loud, crude variety who assume that talking fast, dirty, and at great volumes equates to humor.  Separately, and especially as a joint package, they turn Steve Pink’s Los Angeles update of Edward Zwick’s 1986 Moore/Lowe vehicle (itself an adaptation of David Mamet’s play Sexual Perversity in Chicago) into a cringe-fest.  Setting these misogynistic and frequently homophobic rants to ill-fitting slow jams further rots what, in their absence, is promising tale of genuine love.

Grade: D+

Rated R for sexual content, language and brief drug use.

About Last Night is currently playing at the Carolina Cinemas on Hendersonville Rd.
