A hot sheet for a damn cold day:

Top story

-Snowy weather: The weekend snow of a few, or several, inches (depending upon where you were) pretty much shut things down on Sunday and closed most schools today. Gusty winds and bitter cold temperatures remain the order of the day. Look for slightly warmer temps later in the week, with another dose of cold rain or snow showers.

Rest of the story

-Hot chocolate: Carol Motsinger of the Asheville Citizen-Times has a nice round-up of hot chocolate offerings at local restaurants. Worth noting – the French Broad Chocolate Lounge has 10 liquid truffles and hot chocolate varieties, she reports.

-School cuts: Local colleges and universities are bracing for stiff budget cuts, the Citizen-Times reports

-Speaking of budget cuts: North Carolina Republicans gathered for former U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor’s annual fundraising dinner say everything will be up for consideration.

UNC Asheville is proposing eliminating 20-40 positions next year and raising tuition and fees by double digits. Western Carolina University has proposed raising tuition and fees by nearly 6 percent and has already cut dozens of positions over the last two years, anticipating the current budget crisis. Community colleges are looking to raise tuition and could eliminate some programs.

-Big win: UNCA men’s basketball coach Eddie Biedenbach got his 200th win as UNCA’s coach over the weekend when his team beat Montreat.

-Stimulating supplement: An Asheville-based company, Innovavue Technologies, announces that it has developed a new supplement for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. From the press release:

The developer’s involvements in a recent cancer research study lead to the creation of the powerhouse formula after discovering the benefits of nitric oxide in relation to male enhancement. New diMENsions XL is formulated with a proprietary blend of high-potency natural ingredients that amplify performance and induce increased nitric oxide production within the body. The increased levels of nitric oxide stimulate increased blood flow to the male organ promoting bigger, firmer, longer lasting erections.

Beloved bar-keep: Kristen Schubert, who has served folks around Asheville many a brew and currently is working at Dirty Jack’s is moving out of town. If you want to wish her well, she’s working Dec. 14 and 15, and Dec. 17 is her last day.

Movie option: If you’re looking for a kid-friendly holiday movie, one that’s a little bit off the radar but getting alot of buzz among soccer lovers is playing at Carolina Cinemas right now. It’s called Pelada. Check it.

I watched Pelada on DVD a few weeks ago. It's an entertaining soccer documentary with some really nice visuals from around the world. (Some of the settings are unbelievable, like playing a soccer game in a Bolivian prison.)

But it's also a compelling story about the filmmakers trying to find some purpose in their lives after their college soccer careers have ended. Definitely worth your time.
