-The Asheville Gallery of Art is set to open March 1 in the Capital Center building on Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville. The new art gallery will be next door to Asheville’s new dim sum restaurant, Red Ginger.
-It’s starting to smell like hops down by the French Broad River. That’s because New Belgium Brewing is cranking up its beer production in advance of opening in a couple of months. The Asheville Citizen-Times reported recently that the new brewery plans to open its tasting room in March and begin brewery tours in April.
-There’s a public meeting set for 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the Edington Center to about city of Asheville plans to improve Livingston Street and part of Depot Street. The plan is to add bike paths, landscaping, lighting, sidewalks and more. Press release here.
-There’s a public meeting set for 4-7 p.m. on March 24 at the WNC Farmers Market to hear about plans and options for a new section of greenway in Buncombe County in the vicinity of Brevard Road. “The public will be asked to provide feedback and preferences regarding alignments of a potential greenway segment between Brevard Road north of the new Asheville Outlets Mall and proceeding northto connect into the existing French Broad River Greenway.
-The new set of developments rules that will be proposed for the River Arts District, known as a form-based code, will be shared among members of a committee of the Asheville Area Riverfront Redevelopment Commission later this month. The commission talked about getting a full update regarding the form-based code proposal at its March meeting. The new development regulations will eventually come before Asheville City Council for a vote, probably this fall.
-A new 10k running race in Asheville is set for May 7 beginning in Carrier Park and heading out along the French Broad River. The run will benefit Mama Maisha, a local nonprofit aimed at making motherhood safer in Tanzania. Registration details for Mama Maisha race here.
-The Asheville Downtown Association is accepting applications for its wristband program. The Downtown Association puts on the Downtown After Five summer concert series and sells beer at the events. The Downtown Association partners with local nonprofits who provide volunteers to serve that beer, and the nonprofit earns a cut of beer sales in return.
