From loyal reader J:

Ash,

I am a little confused by this…. Exactly what is the issue with overnight parking in Biltmore Village? From what I understand so far, the owner of New Morning Gallery isn’t at all happy with folks parking in front of his store. I do not know for certain that he is the man behind the curtain or not… just curious if anyone out there knows what’s going on?

Does anyone know what’s behind this? I’ll make a few calls this afternoon on it.

You won’t have to worry about driving home drunk- the police will be busy writing tickets to people who left their cars behind. Then people will appeal and tie up other city officials- yeah this seems like a great use of tax payer money. That way one man can keep cars from in front of his store in the middle of the night. Great idea! How else does John spend tax payer money?

    Dear Bill,

The Bohemian offers valet parking as a service to its guest, but of course many guests will park on the street spots in the village as they are PUBLIC SPOTS. Guests in that hotel and guests that patronize all the many restaurants in the village bring in invaluable tax dollars and revenue to our city. Those beautiful greenways and fun festivals are city can afford are funded on the backs of the people who patronize the village, especially the hotel guests who not only dine and drink but fork out 10.75% of their $250 a night room revenue.

Oh and they also put money directly in the pocket of your friends who might be their waiters or bartenders.

Leave the Bohemian out of this, and leave all the restaurants and bars as well. It is a FUNDAMENTAL right that the PUBLIC can park in PUBLIC SPACES. Those spots are not OWNED by John and his art gallery. It is really embarrassing to see how a business owner like John with his many holdings can encourage the city to do something this unfair.

    Thanks John.

John: Wow man, I’m way to drunk to drive.
    Bill : Yeah, me too.
John: guess we’ll have to walk home.
Bill: Yep…oh shit, you’ll get towed.
    John: guess I’m driving

Presented to you by SIMPLE LOGIC

    I agree with Dr. Blake!
Last time I was in the Village I was Hammered!!! I just have to thank the gods I didn’t drive! I was drinking white lightning or something just as strong, which is not like me at all! It was like I had an alter ego that night or something. Luckily I caught a ride from some blond haired cutie! I don’t remember his name but he was my hero!
Anyways, I think this is a bad idea…

the Grand Bohemian tells people checking in to use valet or "just park on the street" so I am guessing the hotel is the "problem" of course if their fine community had required the hotel to have parking, that would have made sense

Listen, like many people in Asheville I have been compleatly wasted many nights in Biltmore Village. It would have been a thunderous mistake to have operated a vehicle in this condition. I urge people to reconsider this terrible action.

I see nothing wrong with leaving a car overnight. A good way to kill a thriving downtown is to attempt to make it elitist and keep people out. By making businesses easily accessible you keep the downtown an interesting place that people will visit. If you want to turn into a community where the only interest is in strip malls and suberbs- go ahead.

"Could it be that the valet parking at the Bohemian Hotel, or just guests themselves, are using the streets of Biltmore Village for parking their cars and taking up spaces that would be available to shoppers in the Village. Banning overnight parking would seem to apply to this situation."

Really? Excuse my confusion, but who exactly is shopping in Biltmore Village between the hours of 2am and 6am? I don’t see how this applies at all. What I see is the city basically telling people who patronize Biltmore Village’s restaurants and bars that instead of continuing to patronize these organizations in a smart and safe way (in particular when consuming alcoholic beverages), they must either stop patronizing the restaurants in Biltmore Village for these purposes all-together (which will lead to decreased sales in the Biltmore Village community) or endanger themselves and other people by driving while intoxicated. Good job, Asheville! As a citizen of this community I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you for putting my little corner of the community in a lose-lose situation.

i agree whole-heartedly with J, we are talking about public parking not private, the spaces should br available to all, first come, first serve.

The streets have looked perfectly fine since I moved here in 2003. I for one tend to drink too much at Neo Cantina or Wayside…or even Rezaz once or twice and leave my car overnight so I don’t drink and drive. He really wants to penalize me for making a mature decision?

That man stands outside his studio and yells all the time. Its Biltmore VILLAGE not HIS VILLAGE. No other stores have complained. Perhaps its time to mark this off as a personal vendetta.

I can name six restaurants surrounding this area that offer alcohol. Rezaz, Neo Cantina, Fig, Red Stag Grill, Corner Kitchen, and Wayside Grill. Now what message are we sending to anyone who dines at any of these establishments and decides they have had one too many? Is this a safe and intelligent decision?
As far as John’s comment goes, it is my understanding that city streets are for the use of any citizen of our city! It is Not the personal parking garage for Biltmore Village. And I am certain that any guests of the Bohemian are bringing revenue to Biltmore Village as well. Not to mention that Downtown Asheville has several hotels and several shops as well on their streets but there is not this idiotic rule there is there?
Bottom line, someone is going to get hurt. Find a different solution!

Whatever: "Why on earth would you be in Biltmore Village from 2am to 6pm? Answer me that."

Perhaps someone who’d been drinking would do the responsible thing and get a ride home, leaving their vehicle to pick up in the morning?

If it IS because of street cleaners, shouldn’t the Biltmore Village ABC store parking lot be fair game for leaving a car?

"Why would your car be parked there?" would be a more relevant question.

The answer could be: maybe someone had a few too many margaritas at Neo Cantina, decided to be responsible, take a cab home and pick up their car in the morning.

It is a ridiculous rule. There are street cleaners in downtown Asheville and there’s no law about leaving a car parked there. This just doesn’t make sense.

Why on earth would you be in Biltmore Village from 2am to 6pm? Answer me that. Maybe they have hired a street cleaning company.
