Asheville sculptor’s work on display in ‘Raw Identity’ exhibit

What makes a person’s identity? This has been a favorite subject of artists and philosophers for centuries. The Fayetteville Museum of Art is tackling that age-old question in an exhibit opening this weekend.

The exhibit “Raw Identity” features the works of three artists, Harry McDaniel, a sculptor; J.J. Ohlinger, a painter; and Doug VandeZande, a photographer. Each artist deconstructs “traditional portraiture to reveal the raw identity beneath,” according to the museum’s Web site.

The exhibit runs Saturday through May 10. A premiere party is Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum. The party, which is free, will include light hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and music from the Chapel Hill folk-duo Birds and Arrows. A gallery talk with the artists is at 7 p.m.
