Asheville officials are close to hiring a new director for the Asheville Civic Center.

At Monday’s Civic Center Commission meeting, board members got an update on the months-long search for a director to replace former director David Pisha.

Last week, Asheville officials brought four job candidates to town for two days of extensive interviews, tours and presentations. The city manager will get final feedback and, after last-minute vetting, will be prepared to make a job offer by the end of the week.

As you know, the aging Civic Center continues to be an albatross around the city’s neck. The entertainment venue has been sucking up taxpayers’ money for decades and continues to need major repairs. (It’s currently awaiting a new roof.) City leaders have yet to figure out what do with this decrepit downtown destination.

But here’s to a new experienced, well-paid director who may yet find it new life.
