Here’s an interesting tidbit passed along to me by loyal reader Gordon. An Asheville couple, Scott and Lauren, is in the running to win Crate & Barrel’s Ultimate Wedding Contest. I’m always a little suspect of marketing ventures like this, but it would be pretty cool for this Asheville twosome to have Crate & Barrel produce a $100,000 wedding for them.

Check out Scott and Lauren’s blog to read up on their love story, then go vote. Here’s a snippet:

The contest is simple. Cate&Barrel is offering to pay for our wedding…well, the contest winners wedding. They will put on a $100,000 wedding and will work with local companies, to plan and then broadcast (via print and advertisement) the wedding nationwide. Crate&Barrel picks the location of the wedding, but as far as I’m aware the winner are allowed some input on what they would like.

To be considered to win the grand prize, we need to be voted into the top 50 couples by March 31, 2010. This means we need approx 1,000 votes, and were hoping the Asheville community will help us to get to that spot!

What’s in it for Asheville? IF we were the winner, this would give Asheville some amazing publicity. This could bring in weddings, new tourists, and just overall exposure for a city that is already amazing, but hopefully will bring tourist (which equals $ for the city), possibly new businesses, and again overall exposure.

Agree with above, they are abusing the Asheville connection. If they had planned to have the wedding in Asheville, spend the $100,000 in Asheville in return for the votes then I would have voted for them. They plan to take the $100k to Charleton. Forget it. Getting married in Charleston does nothing for Asheville. Just because he is from Madison County does not meen thousands will flock to Asheville to have their wedding. Too bad….SUPPORT THE LOCAL ECONOMY!! SUPPORT ASHEVILLE!

    $100,000 wedding? Nationwide broadcast? Yech!

"as far as I’m aware the winner are allowed some input on what they would like." I think the couple should pick the food, but the corporate sponsors should replace all the guests with supermodels. Isn’t that the point?

Tiny Turner’s "What’s Love Got to Do With It?" is playing in the background…

I was about to vote and noticed that their Ultimate Wedding details include: "Vintage; An old low country that could only be found in Charleston South Carolina." (see below) I’m all for helping out a couple have a fabulous wedding, but I’m not sure about this helping out Asheville.

Three important details about our Ultimate Wedding.
    1. A relaxed environment, but pulsing with excitement as all of our friends and family connect as a new family. 2. Vintage: An old low country that could only be found in Charleston South Carolina. 3. Big Band (Frank Sinatra, etc.) live musical entertainment that captures our fun loving spirits.

I think congrats are in order even if they don’t win.
