From my story for the Asheville Citizen-Times about Whole Foods Market planning to open a store on Tunnel Road:

Whole Foods Market, a natural foods grocery chain based in Texas, is planning to build a store in the Tunnel Road shopping center that’s now home to a Kmart that is closing.

According to documents on record at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office, the store will occupy a 35,000-square-foot building at the shopping center, which will undergo significant renovations before it opens.

Representatives from the shoppping center owner, Edens development group, told staff members from the city of Asheville on Monday that the building currently housing Kmart would be demolished and replaced by space for two large tenants, while other parts of the shopping center would be renovated.

When is this store scheduled to open? Does anyone know? I have been saying for YEARS how badly East Asheville needs a natural foods store. I REALLY wish it weren’t a corporate chain, but at least it is something.

Greenlife will continue along as usual. No changes, says Whole Foods.

Any word on what, if anything, this means for Greenlife? Hopefully, nothing, and we’ll get to keep Greenlife, as well as the new WF store.
