Asheville Bookworks to Host Region’s Second Annual Edible Book Festival

On April 1, 2010 Asheville BookWorks will host Western North Carolina’s second International Edible Book Festival. The Edible Book Festival, established in 2000, has since expanded throughout the world. According to the festival founders, “this ephemeral global banquet… is a celebration of the ingestion of culture and a way to concretely share a book; it is also a deeper reflection on our attachment to food and our cultural differences”. The event is held on April Fools’ Day because it is the perfect day to “eat your words and play with them.”
Proceeds from this event will fund scholarships for classes at BookWorks for residents of Asheville and surrounding communities.
THE EVENT
The Edible Book Festival celebrates the culinary, literary and visual arts in one exciting event! Arrive hungry – entries will be eaten! A panel of judges will evaluate the entries based on creative use of ingredients and how those materials further the goals of the writing or design. The top three artists selected by the judges will receive prizes. First prize is an original artist’s book created at Asheville BookWorks. In addition, everyone attending the event will have a ballot and can rate the pieces on creativity of materials, concept, and execution.
CALL FOR ENTRIES
BookWorks is soliciting participants for the Edible Book Festival to create entries that are “bookish”. Qualified entries will successfully integrate text or literary inspiration and/or appear “book-like” in form. Entries must be entirely edible and properly prepared according to food safety guidelines. Please provide a list of ingredients with your entry.
Each participant receives a free ticket to the event and is eligible for Edible Book Festival’s competition. Download a submission form or pick one up at Asheville BookWorks. Books that do not need refrigeration may be delivered to BookWorks between March 30 and 31, 2010. Books that need refrigeration should be delivered on April 1 by 1PM.
INFORMATION SESSION
On Monday, March 15 from 6 to 7 pm, anyone interested in submitting an entry for the festival or who simply wants to know more about the history of the Edible Food Festival, is invited to a Question & Answer session at BookWorks. The presentation is free and open to the public.
