Diva Darcel

Aside from seeing Barack Obama live and in person, I got my biggest thrill Sunday from being in the presence of Darcel Grimes, the WLOS anchor-legend.

Darcel, whom I lovingly refer to as The Diva, actually came out and covered a news event. It was amazing. I haven’t seen her in person in decades. I’ve never seen her cover a news event. She doesn’t come out much in public. You never see her out in the community or shopping or anything.

So I did a double-take when I brushed past Darcel, then turned and got in position to get a few shots of her. And boy, was she getting some love and attention. Everyone wanted to take her picture or shake her hand or just talk to her. I saw her talking to a former WLOSer (Mary the red-head… her last name escapes me… help) and stopping for photos. If she ever wanted to run for political office around here, I’ve no doubt she would win handily.

Great to see you, Darcel! Come out and join your fellow WLOSers on the front lines more often.

Darcel Grimes and Frank Kracher together on the anchor desk again. Now that would be sweet!

Isreal…if their is one thing viewers do not give a flying fig about it is what other random people think.

When CNN covers a speech or debate, they don’t shove a mic in the crowd unless something insane is happening.

Mary Hunt was a solid reporter back in the days WLOS was still up on Macon Avenue. She now reps a pharaceutical company and raises two sons here in Asheville. She is one of the great people News 13 misses.

Obama Coverage was above average, That is scary! All Darcel did was talk for one minute and then took a pool camera shot. That is not even coverage. Now if they wanted to really cover it, they would have interviewed people coming in, got pubic opinion about what they were looking foward to hearing. Just because the picture and sound was clean should not constitute coverage. I heard they had three managers at the station while the "coverage took place", what the hell did they do to help the coverage? I’m sorry but to call what they did Sunday on My 40 coverage is just stupid. The viewing public deserved better than that. Although, at least they took it live. I will give them that. The other stations in the market didn’t even try so I give them a "pat on the back" for that.

I saw her at Fuddruckers once (this was a couple of years ago). I remember thinking she was REALLY skinny and hoping she was going to order a 1/2 pounder.

Can you imagine watching her eat a 1/2 pounder Fuddruckers burger? That’s one for the scrapbook.

I watched the MY40 broadcast of the Obama speech. Darcel did a good job hosting. The coverage was above average for WLOS – no technical problems!

I’ve only seen Darcel in public twice, both times at Sam’s Club.People were watching her from afar, talking about her in hushed tones and asking clerks about her after she checked out. You’d have thought they were in the presence of a superstar.

    And well, they were.

Hang out at Verizon. I saw her there trying to nail down the fine print in her contract. She totally used the news to push the deal, too: "I have to be in the chair in 30 minutes, can you guys move this along?"
