A few years ago, the Citizen’s Ace Hardware store on Merrimon Avenue closed down and moved farther north to much ado. The old hardware store had a great history, and folks in their posh North Asheville bungalows loved to shop there. We used to shop in that old store on Sundays after church.

Alas, Walgreen’s bought the space, demolished the old store and its creaky wooden floors, and set up shop. That ticked off a lot of North Asheville folks who relied on the shop to have just the right screw or nail or lighting fixture. (I also think the new Citizen’s Ace Hardware must not be doing nearly the same amount of business as before out there in Woodfin next to the Skate-A-Round.)

Sensing the void, Ace Hardware is now building its return to North Asheville. Houser Shoes, on the other side of Merrimon but pretty close to the former hardware store, shut down last year and is now being transformed.

So welcome back, Ace Hardware! North Asheville missed you.

The North Asheville place is awesome. Ace Hardware services are amazing and they have everything. It used to be the neighborhood shoe store (Houser Shoes). Today, it is being remodeled into the new community Ace Hardware Store. Little businesses like this have to plant stores like this strategically in between the larger Lowe's and Home Depot stores in Asheville and Weaverville.

It is my opinion that the business owner likes to generate and post positive reviews about his business on this site, so take what you read with a grain of salt!

I went into the new Ace store this past weekend. Their employees were not only friendly, but they were also knowledgeable, which was nice since I’ve been going to Lowes for so long. I was also surprised at how their selection and pricing compared. Between being able to avoid Tunnel Rd and giving the business to local owners, they’ve won me as a loyal customer. I’m going back this weekend for the big grand opening sale.

I am a fan of the new ACE– it’s bright, clean and well stocked. The employees are cheerful and quite knowledgeable. For those of y’all that have been around North Asheville awhile, they happen to employ a guy that used to work at the old Holladay Paint store, Casey is his name. If you have a problem, go see him. That guy knows his stuff!

I’m not sure how local business owners opening a store that employees local people that work hard for a living is ruining Asheville and makes us sharks.

I understand the reason behind a businessmans building a store to cut off business from another, and for that reason i while being a very close neighbor and huge user of ace hardwares services, will never step into the new store on merrimon ave as well as the weaverville store. it is folks like this which are ruining our town. i tell everyone i know this story and tell them to go to citizens…its the right thing to do. out with the sharks.

I am actually one of the owners of the new Ace Hardware on Merrimon. We are local owners and also have the Ace store in Weaverville on Weaver Blvd. I know Citizen’s was a very popular store for North Asheville and we are looking forward to providing the community with great service and products as well. We should be open sometime in the first week of February.

Best Hardware is in Woodfin after being forced out where Walgreens’ is now and is not returning to Merrimon. It’s a competitor coming to Merrimon where the shoe store used to be.

Don’t think all North Asheville homes, bungalows or not, are posh, just some of them. Citizen’s, the much beloved hardware store, was at one time a True Value store. In its further-up-the road incarnation, it is affiliated with yet another national brand, neither Ace nor True Value. Who is behind the new Ace franchise on Merrimon? They will have to go a long way to equal the customer service and loyalty Citizen’s has earned (even though the founding Groce family didn’t feel the same loyalty, apparently, when it didn’t help them stay in their old location). Did Merrimon really need a Walgreens, with CVS and Rite-Aid (Eckerd’s at the time) so close?
Who owns the new Ace? An enterprising reporter for one of the newspapers should give us some coverage on this. Who will get the story first? Citizen-Times? Mountain Exoress?

FYI Citizen’s is not an Ace Hardware anymore, they switched to "Do It Best Hardware" when they moved to Woodfin. The Ace that is opening on Merrimon is not affiliated with Citizens. However, It is affiliated with the Ace Hardware that has been in Weaverville for about 4 1/2 years.

Citizens is in the space that formerly was the skating rink. Now the only place to roll is Tarheels rink in Swannanoa.
