Word on the street: Changes afoot at Rosetta’s Kitchen, Asheville’s beloved vegetarian restaurant

Word around the Twitterverse is that there are changes afoot at Rosetta’s Kitchen, Asheville’s beloved vegetarian/vegan restaurant. The Lexington Avenue restaurant is not closing, tweets Mountain Xpress food writer Mackensy Lunsford.

But I’m hearing that there are definitely changes coming for the homey restuarant known for its delicious, cheap eats. Can anyone clarify?

Here’s a tidbit from a 2009 blog post by owner Rosetta Star, in which she talks about her restaurant:

The concept I was re-creating was a warm Appalachian home, the open table, pots full of food, the kitchen that always smells enticing and inviting. I think that hits people on a deep sensory level…. walking in and smelling garlic sautéing, it’s a visceral, intuitive feeling. It is something that nourishes deeply.

Now into our 7^th year, I think we have achieved success on some level and we strive daily to live up to our own reputation. I feel like at this stage, we have made something special, we as a city, we as a family, and we as a collective force of people who have poured their visions, their love, and of course their labor into the place since it was still just a daydream.

The place wouldn’t have been possible without the love and dedication of all of the kitchen’s past and present staff. I ask, they answer, I try my best to implement. It has been a collaboration, and it will continue to be. That’s what makes it work. Well that and love, faith and gravy!

I agree with Ricky … cheap it is not unless you get a bland-tasting burrito. I have noticed a big difference in the past year with the decline of the quality food at Rosettas. The thing I am most sad about is the elimination of the Sunday Brunch. I used to go their every Sunday and loved Rosetta’s brunch. She had the best pancakes in town — now you never know if they will even be on the menu. And long gone is the soysage and tofu scramble. I am greatly disappointed in the direction of Rosettas … It is definitely AFOOT 🙁

Known for its "cheap eats" ? That’s a joke, right? $10 for some rice, kale, tempeh and house sauce isn’t cheap. Especially when you have to wait on yourself. I quit eating there a long time ago because I felt I could easily make something equally as good at home with no hassle for a fraction of the cost… that place is a total gimmick.
