@Stacey – couldn’t agree more. And I know this blog is just reporting the news but it seems like I’ve run across these types of contents with a lot greater frequency lately. Especially given what Biltmore means to Asheville – why not hire a local designer for the label? Or even hire a few local designers and create a Christmas collection.
And as far as the content being for amateur artists – while that may be true, why would Biltmore want their brand represented by a less than capable designer? There isn’t even a monetary prize involved so I don’t see this attracting even the inexperienced designer.
But hey…anybody can design a wine label, right?
Here are some slogans for Biltmore Wine:
Kind of like a museum – only more boring.
After visiting Biltmore, you’ll need a drink.
Biltmore Estate – so huge, you’ll know Vanderbilt means "small penis."
Stacey, I think this "contest" is directed more towards amateur artists than Graphic Designers …. do you think professional Graphic Designers enter such contests as a form of income?
Regardless of how attractive the bottle and label, one thing’s for sure —
Biltmore wines are mostly terrible and of very poor quality.
Yet another instance that belittles graphic designers and their work. GAG and AIGA both have strong stances on such practices.
"You wouldn’t go to a restaurant, eat the food, and expect to pay only if you’re happy. And you’d never go to a mechanic, have them work on your car, letting them know you’ll only pay them if you think they did good work. So should the design industry be any different?"
